NHTSA Grants Zoox First Commercial Exemption for Purpose-Built Robotaxis Without Steering Wheels

NHTSA granted Amazon-owned Zoox a temporary exemption to charge for rides in vehicles lacking steering wheels, pedals, and mirrors — the first U.S. approval for commercial deployment of a purpose-built robotaxi. Up to 2,500 vehicles annually over two years. NHTSA determined equivalent or greater safety versus existing FMVSS, subject to enhanced, evolving oversight. Paid rides begin in Las Vegas August 2026, contingent on state and local approvals.
