At Least 23 Dead as Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake Strikes Kumamoto, Japan

At least 23 people are dead and 62 injured after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture on Japan's Kyushu island on July 28, 2026. A magnitude 5.8 aftershock overnight and 35°C heat are complicating recovery for nearly 5,000 deployed personnel. Over 9,000 people have taken shelter across 506 sites. Prime Minister Takaichi called the rescue "a race against time."
