Electoral Commission can't police misinformation in 2026 campaign ads

The Electoral Commission is urging voters to verify online election information but cannot regulate the content of campaign advertising or political claims, chief electoral officer Karl Le Quesne has confirmed. The Commission's remit covers only enrolment and voting mechanics, not misinformation on social media. Its website vote.nz and phone line 0800 36 76 56 are the official sources. Enrolment closes midnight 25 October.
