Albanese backs creators over tech lobby on AI copyright

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on 15 July that AI companies cannot train models on Australian books, music, art or news without artists' consent. The stance reverses weeks of speculation that the government might grant a copyright exemption to attract datacentre investment. David Pocock claimed in June the government was considering such a carve-out. Whether the promised copyright amendments will contain loopholes for text-and-data mining remains unclear until legislation emerges.
