NYC Bans Subscription Traps, Imposes $525-Per-User Fines

New York City has adopted the nation's first municipal ban on deceptive subscription practices, effective October 1, 2026. Companies must make cancellation as easy as signup or face $525 fines per user subscription, plus back fees. The rule, announced July 10 by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and DCWP Commissioner Samuel AA Levine, fills a vacuum left by the FTC's failed federal click-to-cancel rule, vacated earlier this year by federal appeals court.
