YouTube's TV Dominance Forces Disney to Abandon Linear-TV Defense
Disney is exploring a free, ad-supported Disney+ tier, according to internal comments from Chief Product and Technology Officer Adam Smith during a July streaming town hall. The shift reflects a decisive strategic reorientation: legacy media companies no longer fear cannibalizing their broadcast TV business but instead must compete for casual viewing with YouTube, which dominates connected-TV screen time. A free tier would allow Disney to compete directly for ad-tolerant viewers rather than ceding that audience to a platform it does not control.
