Hacked Flip Phones Bet on Rationing, Not Abstinence

Dumb Co and Commodore are modifying commodity flip phone hardware to run curated apps—WhatsApp, Spotify, Uber—rather than positioning as smartphone replacements. The dumbphone 2 syncs with users' existing phones at $20 retail, forwarding calls and texts while keeping the primary device in reserve. The strategy sidesteps the adoption barrier that killed earlier minimalist phones: total abstinence rarely survives logistics.
