Microsoft Taps Obsidian to Revive Fallout Franchise After Eight-Year Gap
Microsoft has tasked Obsidian Entertainment with developing a new Fallout game, led by design director Josh Sawyer, as part of a broad Xbox restructuring announced July 8, 2026. The move ends an eight-year gap since Fallout 76 shipped in 2018. Sawyer previously designed Fallout: New Vegas, which remains the franchise's critical high point. The project comes alongside 3,200 Xbox layoffs and cancellation of Avowed's sequel, signaling Microsoft's bet on established IP over newer properties.
