Sony Converts PlayStation Disc Factory to Optical Microlenses, Ending Physical Game Production in January 2028
Sony announced July 1, 2026 that it will stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028. The company is repurposing its Salzburg factory to produce optical microlenses instead—a capital commitment signaling this is permanent structural change, not policy revision. Publishers can still reorder existing disc titles after the cutoff, but Sony has not disclosed how re-order terms and margins will work under the new process.
