The giant petrel found at Hawks Nest carried clade 2.3.4.4b, the strain ravaging North America and Europe since 2021. Detection in a pelagic seabird rather than poultry operations provides an epidemiological buffer—but establishes that H5N1 is circulating in NSW waters. The DPI's response protocols will determine how the sector adapts. For commercial poultry operators, the practical ask is immediate: revisit wild-bird exclusion measures. This is no longer a theoretical threat.
