Venezuela's Crippled Economy Complicates Earthquake Response
Two earthquakes on June 24–25, 2026—magnitudes 7.5 and 7.2—struck Venezuela's northern coast, causing widespread collapse in La Guaira, the country's principal port. Venezuela's decade-long economic contraction has depleted civil protection services and the health system. Damage to La Guaira port now threatens to disrupt food and medicine imports at the moment the country faces mass displacement and casualties. The scale of humanitarian need will likely exceed capacity to respond.
