Supreme Court Set to Rule on Whether States Can Ban Semiautomatic Weapons
Connecticut's assault weapon restrictions are now before the Supreme Court in Docket 25-421, presenting the justices their first direct test of whether categorical semiautomatic bans survive the historical-tradition framework established in Bruen (2022). A Brief in Opposition was filed December 18, 2025. Circuit courts have split sharply on applying Bruen's test. A ruling invalidating Connecticut's law could topple similar bans in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Maryland; upholding it would entrench them.
