Commodity Radar Chips Move Material Sensing From Bespoke Hardware to Algorithm Design

Gauthier Lechevalier has prototyped a material-sensing radar system using beamforming algorithms to classify object composition. The advance hinges not on antenna design but on signal processing applied to cheap 60–77 GHz millimetre-wave chips now accessible to independent engineers. This shift from custom RF hardware to software-defined sensing mirrors earlier radar expansions—Doppler to gesture recognition, range-finding to presence detection—and places material discrimination in the accessible, prototyped phase.
