Sunak's Aide Admits to Betting on Election Date Using Inside Information

Craig Williams, former Conservative MP and parliamentary private secretary to Rishi Sunak, pleaded guilty on 29 June 2026 to cheating under the Gambling Act after betting on the timing of the 2024 election call. Williams had access to privileged information as Sunak deliberated calling the 4 July election. He is among 15 charged; the remaining 13 cases face lengthy court backlogs. Sentencing has not been scheduled.
