Proton Closes the Game Library Gap That Killed Steam Machines

Valve's relaunched Steam Machine runs SteamOS, a Linux operating system optimized for gaming. The original 2015 hardware failed partly because the Linux game library was too thin. Proton, Valve's Windows compatibility layer, now runs most top-played Steam titles on Linux without user intervention. That technical shift—proven by the Steam Deck since 2022—makes the current Steam Machine's software foundation fundamentally more viable than its predecessor's.
