UN Report Blames Global Powers for Myanmar Death Toll

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights verified 702 civilian deaths in Myanmar between August 2025 and January 2026, but titled its report "Foreign indifference compounds suffering." The agency directly faulted ASEAN's failed consensus, China and Russia's Security Council shielding of the junta, and Western sanctions that have not curtailed military operations. The indictment extends beyond the Tatmadaw to the state actors and institutions that have failed to restrain it.
