NASA's ERNEST Rover Covers 16 Miles at 10x Speed of Current Mars Rovers

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory field-tested ERNEST, a 4-foot rover prototype, across 16 miles of desert terrain in 37 hours—covering distances comparable to Apollo 17's entire three-day lunar mission. The rover traveled more than 10 times faster than operational rovers like Curiosity, which averages 100 meters per hour. ERNEST's speed and autonomous navigation capabilities were tested on June 18, 2026, to address mobility constraints that currently limit lunar and Mars missions.
