Conservationist Mona Khalil Dies in Israeli Strike; Decades of Field Expertise in Eastern Mediterranean Lost
Mona Khalil, 76, died June 19 in Beirut from injuries sustained in an Israeli strike on her home near Tyre, Lebanon. For decades she protected endangered loggerhead and green sea turtle nesting sites along Lebanon's southern coast through nightly patrols and local coordination. Institutional conservation programs cannot quickly replace the ground-level presence and community trust she built. Her loss breaks a continuity critical to monitoring and protecting habitat in a region fractured by repeated cycles of conflict.
