Merz's CDU falls below 5% threshold in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's centre-right CDU fell below the 5% threshold for seats in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Le Monde reported of provisional results. German broadcaster DW said the Berlin and north-east ballots dealt the party a historic defeat. Mr Merz said the results were disastrous and vowed to continue. Reuters reported no immediate challenge to his leadership.
