Merz vows to keep CDU-SPD coalition after two state defeats

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on 21 September he will keep his CDU-SPD coalition together for Germany's "democratic future" and press ahead with reforms after defeats in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin. He said "We are determined to live up to the historic challenges our country is facing." Holding the centre will test coalition discipline.
