Bundibugyo Ebola Strain Evades Existing Vaccine, Blocking Proven Containment Tool

The 2026 DRC outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, which is not well-covered by rVSV-ZEBOV (Ervebo), the vaccine that halted the 2018–2020 Kivu outbreak. No licensed vaccine targets Bundibugyo specifically. This eliminates ring vaccination—the strategy that has become central to recent Ebola containment. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids. Without this proven epidemiological tool, response must rely on PPE, case-finding, and isolation in a region already fractured by decades of conflict.
