California Advances Plan for Verified AI Kill Switch

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order Sept. 18, 2026, directing an expert group to recommend within two months enforceable AI oversight, including a routinely verified kill switch that would require developers to shut off certain programs in emergencies. The group will also weigh independent audits and auditor-set reporting standards.
