Burnham abolishes department leading UK AI legislation work

Andy Burnham scrapped the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology in one of his first acts after succeeding Keir Starmer as prime minister. The department had led work on AI legislation, including plans for mandatory safety testing. Its removal leaves unclear who owns closing the gap between testing capacity and legal authority.
