Millisecond software defect caused UK flight chaos, NATS says

National Air Traffic Services said a millisecond-long software defect corrupted flight data, triggering mass cancellations and delays across the UK on 8 September 2026. The fault lay in code allocation for radar identification, when a paused manual request resumed with corrupted output. NATS said mitigation is in place while a permanent fix undergoes safety testing.
