Fiji Declares HIV National Emergency as 1 in 60 Infected
Fiji has declared HIV a national emergency, with one in 60 people living with the virus, or about 9,000 cases. Health Minister Atonio Lalabalavu announced the declaration Sept. 15. Officials say transmission is largely fueled by a methamphetamine epidemic. Emergency powers could expand treatment and outreach after an earlier 2025 outbreak plan failed to contain spread.
