Nearly Half of World's Children Exposed to Triple Climate Threats

UNICEF's Children's Climate Risk Report 2026, released 16 June, maps the first comprehensive global picture of children facing overlapping climate hazards. The agency found nearly half of all children simultaneously exposed to at least three climate stressors, with drought, extreme heat, and heatwaves forming the most common trio. One billion children face extreme survival risks from climate hazards overall. The report's multi-hazard methodology moves beyond single-threat counting to reveal how compounded stressors affect developing bodies and systems differently—a qualitative shift in vulnerability assessment for pediatric populations.
