Thread 1.4, released September 2024, introduces TCAT—a commissioning mechanism that automates secure onboarding of large device volumes at once. The feature addresses a growing operational constraint as Matter deployments scale from pilots into commercial installations where manual provisioning of dozens or hundreds of endpoints is untenable. TCAT allows commissioning state to be carried as protocol traffic rather than through out-of-band channels, aligning Thread's model with enterprise networking expectations.
